Overview

2015 SJ7 is a very small asteroid whose orbit could bring it in close proximity to Earth. NASA JPL has classified 2015 SJ7 as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

2015 SJ7 orbits the sun every 230 days (0.63 years), coming as close as 0.40 AU and reaching as far as 1.07 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2015 SJ7 is probably between 0.021 to 0.047 kilometers in diameter, making it a small to average asteroid, very roughly comparable in size to a school bus or smaller.

Close Approaches

2015 SJ7's orbit is 0.02 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2015 SJ7 has 5 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
Sept. 9, 2020 8,143,264 11.590
Sept. 10, 2025 28,399,957 16.257
Oct. 31, 2027 19,350,420 13.978
Oct. 27, 2032 4,223,499 9.829
Sept. 10, 2047 10,842,407 12.183

Images and Observations

2015 SJ7's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Sept. 23, 2015. It was last officially observed on Sept. 30, 2015. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 31 observations used to determine its orbit.
