Overview

C/2001 OG108 (LONEOS) is a large comet with a medium-length orbit that is highly inclined to the ecliptic plane of the solar system. NASA JPL has classified LONEOS as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

LONEOS orbits the sun every 17,700 days (48.46 years), coming as close as 0.99 AU and reaching as far as 25.61 AU from the sun. Its orbit is highly elliptical. LONEOS is about 13.6 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than 99% of asteroids, comparable in size to the city of Cleveland, Ohio.

The rotation of LONEOS has been observed. It completes a rotation on its axis every 57.12 hours.

No Close Approaches

LONEOS's orbit is 0.30 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

Orbital simulations conducted by NASA JPL's CNEOS do not show any close approaches to Earth.

Images and Observations

LONEOS's orbit is determined by observations dating back to July 28, 2001. It was last officially observed on July 3, 2002. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 882 observations used to determine its orbit.

Accessibility and Exploration

This comet is not considered a viable target for human exploration by the NHATS study.
