Comet C/2017 W2 (Leonard) is an object with a medium-length orbit that is highly inclined to the ecliptic plane of the solar system. NASA JPL has not classified Leonard as potentially hazardous because its orbit does not bring it close to Earth.

Leonard orbits the sun every 18,500 days (50.65 years), coming as close as 3.96 AU and reaching as far as 23.46 AU from the sun. Its orbit is highly elliptical.

Leonard's orbit is 2.98 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is an extremely wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

Orbital simulations conducted by NASA JPL's CNEOS do not show any close approaches to Earth.

Leonard's orbit is determined by observations dating back to April 23, 2017. It was last officially observed on May 12, 2018. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 169 observations used to determine its orbit.

This comet is not considered a viable target for human exploration by the NHATS study.
