Overview

2022 SS20 is a very small asteroid whose orbit crosses the orbit of Earth. NASA JPL has classified 2022 SS20 as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

2022 SS20 orbits the sun every 662 days (1.81 years), coming as close as 1.01 AU and reaching as far as 1.96 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2022 SS20 is probably between 0.057 to 0.128 kilometers in diameter, making it a small to average asteroid, very roughly comparable in size to a school bus or smaller.

Close Approaches

2022 SS20's orbit is 0.07 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2022 SS20 has 6 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
Dec. 8, 2022 12,954,644 4.214
Nov. 26, 2051 15,051,720 5.269
Jan. 12, 2090 11,599,137 5.397
Jan. 8, 2119 10,876,673 4.583
Jan. 18, 2148 13,534,712 6.202
Jan. 1, 2197 11,241,301 4.136

Images and Observations

2022 SS20's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Sept. 25, 2022. It was last officially observed on Feb. 28, 2023. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 70 observations used to determine its orbit.
