Overview

2022 QK is a very small asteroid whose orbit approaches the orbit of Earth but does not cross it. NASA JPL has classified 2022 QK as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

2022 QK orbits the sun every 727 days (1.99 years), coming as close as 1.07 AU and reaching as far as 2.10 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2022 QK is probably between 0.018 to 0.041 kilometers in diameter, making it a small to average asteroid, very roughly comparable in size to a school bus or smaller.

Close Approaches

2022 QK's orbit is 0.06 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2022 QK has 4 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
Aug. 26, 2020 10,490,170 7.040
Aug. 22, 2022 8,446,267 7.005
Aug. 16, 2024 12,188,944 7.408
Aug. 10, 2026 20,390,588 8.443

Images and Observations

2022 QK's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Aug. 18, 2022. It was last officially observed on Aug. 29, 2022. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 43 observations used to determine its orbit.
