Overview

2021 GF2 is a very small asteroid whose orbit crosses the orbit of Earth. NASA JPL has classified 2021 GF2 as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

2021 GF2 orbits the sun every 378 days (1.03 years), coming as close as 0.84 AU and reaching as far as 1.20 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2021 GF2 is probably between 0.008 to 0.035 kilometers in diameter, making it a small to average asteroid, very roughly comparable in size to a school bus or smaller.

Close Approaches

2021 GF2's orbit is 0.03 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2021 GF2 has 7 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
June 22, 2019 28,611,801 4.599
Dec. 11, 2019 22,315,834 5.062
May 9, 2020 26,391,422 4.539
March 10, 2021 7,638,983 3.851
March 16, 2022 24,782,093 9.845
March 10, 2052 6,717,999 4.063
March 16, 2053 24,659,363 9.814

Images and Observations

2021 GF2's orbit is determined by observations dating back to April 3, 2021. It was last officially observed on April 7, 2021. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 12 observations used to determine its orbit.

Accessibility and Exploration

2021 GF2 can be reached with a journey of 394 days. This trajectory would require a delta-v of 5.815 km/s. To put this into perspective, the delta-v to launch a rocket to Low-Earth Orbit is 9.7 km/s. There are 230,428 potential trajectories and launch windows to this asteroid.
