Overview

2016 XH2 is a very small asteroid whose orbit approaches the orbit of Earth but does not cross it. NASA JPL has classified 2016 XH2 as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" due to its predicted close pass(es) with Earth.

2016 XH2 orbits the sun every 790 days (2.16 years), coming as close as 1.03 AU and reaching as far as 2.32 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2016 XH2 is probably between 0.154 to 0.345 kilometers in diameter, making it a small to average asteroid, very roughly comparable in size to a football field.

Close Approaches

2016 XH2's orbit is 0.03 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2016 XH2 has 7 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
April 3, 2030 12,271,628 6.615
April 5, 2043 14,079,675 7.058
Feb. 11, 2106 18,158,346 7.912
Feb. 20, 2119 10,691,193 6.072
Feb. 9, 2132 22,673,554 8.915
April 15, 2186 22,111,720 8.885
April 6, 2199 12,171,283 6.623

Images and Observations

2016 XH2's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Dec. 4, 2016. It was last officially observed on Nov. 3, 2018. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 189 observations used to determine its orbit.
