Overview

154988 (2004 XN35) is a small asteroid whose orbit crosses the orbit of Earth. NASA JPL has classified 2004 XN35 as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

2004 XN35 orbits the sun every 675 days (1.85 years), coming as close as 0.48 AU and reaching as far as 2.53 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2004 XN35 is probably between 0.558 to 1.247 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than ~97% of asteroids but small compared to large asteroids, very roughly comparable in size to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Close Approaches

2004 XN35's orbit is 0.15 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2004 XN35 has 6 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
April 25, 2069 26,201,964 23.446
Nov. 26, 2089 27,401,687 19.183
April 29, 2093 25,999,206 21.280
Dec. 2, 2113 22,721,900 21.836
Dec. 8, 2137 28,266,096 25.764
Dec. 1, 2174 23,673,736 20.839

Images and Observations

2004 XN35's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Jan. 26, 1998. It was last officially observed on March 1, 2022. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 389 observations used to determine its orbit.
