Key Facts

Overview

145451 (2005 RM43) is a dwarf planet whose orbit extends beyond the orbit of Neptune. NASA JPL has not classified 2005 RM43 as potentially hazardous because its orbit does not bring it close to Earth.

2005 RM43 orbits the sun every 324,000 days (887.06 years), coming as close as 35.10 AU and reaching as far as 149.42 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2005 RM43 is probably between 315.177 to 704.758 kilometers in diameter, making it one of the largest objects, very roughly comparable in size to the U.S. state of Iowa.

The rotation of 2005 RM43 has been observed. It completes a rotation on its axis every 6.71 hours.

No Close Approaches

2005 RM43's orbit is 34.20 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is an extremely wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

Orbital simulations conducted by NASA JPL's CNEOS do not show any close approaches to Earth.

Images and Observations

2005 RM43's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Nov. 17, 1976. It was last officially observed on Jan. 24, 2023. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 510 observations used to determine its orbit.

Accessibility and Exploration

This asteroid is not considered a viable target for human exploration by the NHATS study.
