Key Facts

Overview

65P/Gunn is a large comet whose orbit features a relatively short period, low inclination, and is controlled by Jupiter's gravitational effects. NASA JPL has not classified 65P/Gunn as potentially hazardous because its orbit does not bring it close to Earth.

65P/Gunn orbits the sun every 2,790 days (7.64 years), coming as close as 2.91 AU and reaching as far as 4.85 AU from the sun. 65P/Gunn is about 10.8 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than 99% of asteroids, comparable in size to the city of Boston.

No Close Approaches

65P/Gunn's orbit is 1.90 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is an extremely wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

Orbital simulations conducted by NASA JPL's CNEOS do not show any close approaches to Earth.

Images and Observations

65P/Gunn's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Sept. 23, 2013. It was last officially observed on May 13, 2023. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 2,067 observations used to determine its orbit.

Accessibility and Exploration

This comet is not considered a viable target for human exploration by the NHATS study.
