Overview

Bivoj is a very small asteroid whose orbit approaches the orbit of Earth but does not cross it. NASA JPL has classified Bivoj as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

Bivoj orbits the sun every 952 days (2.61 years), coming as close as 1.05 AU and reaching as far as 2.74 AU from the sun. Bivoj is about 0.4 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than 90% of asteroids but tiny compared to large asteroids, comparable in size to the U.S. Capitol building.

The rotation of Bivoj has been observed. It completes a rotation on its axis every 2.71 hours.

Close Approaches

Bivoj's orbit is 0.07 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

Bivoj has 5 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
Dec. 30, 2078 14,286,018 5.920
Jan. 9, 2092 10,476,346 5.180
Jan. 12, 2105 10,627,744 5.153
Jan. 15, 2118 10,855,257 5.239
Jan. 26, 2131 16,160,852 6.591

Images and Observations

Bivoj's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Oct. 12, 1953. It was last officially observed on April 29, 2019. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 523 observations used to determine its orbit.

Accessibility and Exploration

This asteroid is not considered a viable target for human exploration by the NHATS study.
