Overview

2023 CD1 is a very small asteroid whose orbit crosses the orbit of Earth. NASA JPL has classified 2023 CD1 as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

2023 CD1 orbits the sun every 402 days (1.10 years), coming as close as 0.55 AU and reaching as far as 1.58 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2023 CD1 is probably between 0.047 to 0.106 kilometers in diameter, making it a small to average asteroid, very roughly comparable in size to a school bus or smaller.

Close Approaches

2023 CD1's orbit is 0.07 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2023 CD1 has 4 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
Feb. 17, 2023 10,813,707 16.108
Oct. 5, 2026 24,775,736 17.261
Feb. 18, 2034 14,977,788 14.074
Feb. 19, 2045 26,113,890 11.842

Images and Observations

2023 CD1's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Jan. 22, 2023. It was last officially observed on Feb. 16, 2023. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 34 observations used to determine its orbit.
