Overview

2022 MA3 is a very small asteroid whose orbit crosses the orbit of Earth. NASA JPL has classified 2022 MA3 as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

2022 MA3 orbits the sun every 1,100 days (3.01 years), coming as close as 1.00 AU and reaching as far as 3.16 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2022 MA3 is probably between 0.088 to 0.197 kilometers in diameter, making it a small to average asteroid, very roughly comparable in size to a school bus or smaller.

Close Approaches

2022 MA3's orbit is 0.01 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2022 MA3 has 6 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
July 1, 2019 21,877,482 13.127
July 7, 2022 12,407,691 11.480
July 10, 2025 8,640,019 10.844
July 15, 2028 4,314,188 10.123
July 9, 2031 11,136,477 11.241
July 1, 2034 21,131,056 12.980

Images and Observations

2022 MA3's orbit is determined by observations dating back to June 27, 2022. It was last officially observed on Aug. 30, 2022. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 41 observations used to determine its orbit.
