Overview

2021 LD1 is a very small asteroid whose orbit crosses the orbit of Earth. NASA JPL has classified 2021 LD1 as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" due to its predicted close pass(es) with Earth.

2021 LD1 orbits the sun every 1,710 days (4.68 years), coming as close as 0.99 AU and reaching as far as 4.62 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2021 LD1 is probably between 0.233 to 0.520 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than 90% of asteroids but tiny compared to large asteroids, very roughly comparable in size to a football field.

Close Approaches

2021 LD1's orbit is 0.03 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2021 LD1 has 3 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
July 9, 2021 9,659,378 24.476
July 6, 2142 17,458,956 24.869
July 5, 2184 20,468,529 25.664

Images and Observations

2021 LD1's orbit is determined by observations dating back to April 29, 2021. It was last officially observed on Sept. 6, 2021. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 112 observations used to determine its orbit.
