Overview

2020 WM5 is a very small asteroid whose orbit crosses the orbit of Earth. NASA JPL has classified 2020 WM5 as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" due to its predicted close pass(es) with Earth.

2020 WM5 orbits the sun every 1,740 days (4.76 years), coming as close as 0.84 AU and reaching as far as 4.83 AU from the sun. Its orbit is highly elliptical. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2020 WM5 is probably between 0.244 to 0.545 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than 90% of asteroids but tiny compared to large asteroids, very roughly comparable in size to a football field.

Close Approaches

2020 WM5's orbit is 0.03 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2020 WM5 has 5 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
Nov. 23, 2020 12,900,068 15.560
Dec. 12, 2039 13,956,964 19.746
Nov. 13, 2082 23,340,457 15.007
Nov. 11, 2158 26,507,304 15.568
Dec. 15, 2191 19,798,846 20.742

Images and Observations

2020 WM5's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Nov. 28, 2020. It was last officially observed on Feb. 17, 2021. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 205 observations used to determine its orbit.
