Overview

2020 ST1 is a very small asteroid whose orbit approaches the orbit of Earth but does not cross it. NASA JPL has classified 2020 ST1 as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" due to its predicted close pass(es) with Earth.

2020 ST1 orbits the sun every 1,400 days (3.83 years), coming as close as 1.04 AU and reaching as far as 3.87 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2020 ST1 is probably between 0.106 to 0.237 kilometers in diameter, making it a small to average asteroid, very roughly comparable in size to a basketball court.

The rotation of 2020 ST1 has been observed. It completes a rotation on its axis every 2.88 hours.

Close Approaches

2020 ST1's orbit is 0.05 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2020 ST1 has 3 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
Nov. 14, 2020 7,314,485 8.052
Dec. 19, 2066 28,567,233 13.019
Nov. 15, 2154 7,978,329 8.039

Images and Observations

2020 ST1's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Aug. 27, 2020. It was last officially observed on Jan. 4, 2021. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 738 observations used to determine its orbit.

Accessibility and Exploration

This asteroid is not considered a viable target for human exploration by the NHATS study.
