Overview

2019 JE is a very small asteroid whose orbit crosses the orbit of Earth. NASA JPL has classified 2019 JE as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

2019 JE orbits the sun every 1,100 days (3.01 years), coming as close as 1.02 AU and reaching as far as 3.17 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2019 JE is probably between 0.015 to 0.034 kilometers in diameter, making it a small to average asteroid, very roughly comparable in size to a school bus or smaller.

Close Approaches

2019 JE's orbit is 0.01 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that its orbit is relatively close to Earth's orbit.

2019 JE has 5 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
May 5, 2019 950,542 7.210
May 11, 2022 1,883,917 7.220
June 10, 2025 17,075,210 10.479
April 24, 2113 5,848,552 7.319
June 2, 2116 12,785,489 8.675

Images and Observations

2019 JE's orbit is determined by observations dating back to May 1, 2019. It was last officially observed on May 13, 2022. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 138 observations used to determine its orbit.
