Overview

2019 GD3 is a very small asteroid whose orbit approaches the orbit of Earth but does not cross it. NASA JPL has classified 2019 GD3 as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

2019 GD3 orbits the sun every 1,130 days (3.09 years), coming as close as 1.09 AU and reaching as far as 3.16 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2019 GD3 is probably between 0.193 to 0.433 kilometers in diameter, making it a small to average asteroid, very roughly comparable in size to a football field.

Close Approaches

2019 GD3's orbit is 0.12 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2019 GD3 has 4 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
July 18, 2019 17,876,978 6.203
July 17, 2118 17,564,888 6.031
July 21, 2152 16,970,844 6.450
Aug. 8, 2186 29,567,785 10.512

Images and Observations

2019 GD3's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Sept. 26, 2016. It was last officially observed on April 27, 2022. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 777 observations used to determine its orbit.
