Overview

2018 XY3 is a very small asteroid whose orbit crosses the orbit of Earth. NASA JPL has classified 2018 XY3 as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" due to its predicted close pass(es) with Earth.

2018 XY3 orbits the sun every 1,110 days (3.04 years), coming as close as 0.80 AU and reaching as far as 3.41 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2018 XY3 is probably between 0.302 to 0.676 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than 90% of asteroids but tiny compared to large asteroids, very roughly comparable in size to the U.S. Capitol building.

Close Approaches

2018 XY3's orbit is 0.04 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2018 XY3 has 5 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
May 26, 2031 23,678,533 15.164
June 13, 2034 18,173,202 21.347
June 5, 2098 6,412,875 17.977
June 18, 2101 26,582,242 23.070
June 10, 2174 10,369,937 19.923

Images and Observations

2018 XY3's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Oct. 24, 2015. It was last officially observed on July 25, 2022. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 97 observations used to determine its orbit.
