Overview

2018 QN1 is a very small asteroid whose orbit crosses the orbit of Earth. NASA JPL has classified 2018 QN1 as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" due to its predicted close pass(es) with Earth.

2018 QN1 orbits the sun every 1,260 days (3.45 years), coming as close as 1.01 AU and reaching as far as 3.55 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2018 QN1 is probably between 0.134 to 0.301 kilometers in diameter, making it a small to average asteroid, very roughly comparable in size to a football field.

The rotation of 2018 QN1 has been observed. It completes a rotation on its axis every 15.32 hours.

Close Approaches

2018 QN1's orbit is 0.05 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2018 QN1 has 4 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
Sept. 27, 2087 19,148,141 9.444
Nov. 13, 2118 8,433,874 8.712
Sept. 26, 2156 21,001,738 9.923
Nov. 14, 2187 7,506,532 8.748

Images and Observations

2018 QN1's orbit is determined by observations dating back to July 11, 2018. It was last officially observed on Dec. 19, 2018. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 198 observations used to determine its orbit.
