Overview

2016 XM is a very small asteroid whose orbit crosses the orbit of Earth. NASA JPL has classified 2016 XM as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" due to its predicted close pass(es) with Earth.

2016 XM orbits the sun every 935 days (2.56 years), coming as close as 0.96 AU and reaching as far as 2.79 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2016 XM is probably between 0.260 to 0.581 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than 90% of asteroids but tiny compared to large asteroids, very roughly comparable in size to the U.S. Capitol building.

Close Approaches

2016 XM's orbit is 0.02 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2016 XM has 6 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
April 2, 2040 8,220,680 10.899
April 13, 2063 6,175,664 12.397
April 1, 2104 10,330,296 10.698
April 22, 2127 21,136,332 14.684
March 28, 2168 13,832,480 10.473
April 14, 2191 6,234,234 12.364

Images and Observations

2016 XM's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Nov. 6, 2016. It was last officially observed on May 24, 2022. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 86 observations used to determine its orbit.
