Overview

2013 TM4 is a very small asteroid whose orbit approaches the orbit of Earth but does not cross it. NASA JPL has classified 2013 TM4 as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

2013 TM4 orbits the sun every 1,450 days (3.97 years), coming as close as 1.05 AU and reaching as far as 3.98 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2013 TM4 is probably between 0.036 to 0.080 kilometers in diameter, making it a small to average asteroid, very roughly comparable in size to a school bus or smaller.

Close Approaches

2013 TM4's orbit is 0.04 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2013 TM4 has 6 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
Aug. 26, 2021 5,971,907 7.259
Aug. 6, 2025 15,617,819 9.580
Aug. 3, 2029 16,924,638 10.298
Oct. 3, 2112 4,125,830 9.614

Images and Observations

2013 TM4's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Oct. 2, 2013. It was last officially observed on Sept. 18, 2021. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 81 observations used to determine its orbit.
