Overview

2010 QA5 is a very small asteroid whose orbit approaches the orbit of Earth but does not cross it. NASA JPL has classified 2010 QA5 as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

2010 QA5 orbits the sun every 1,820 days (4.98 years), coming as close as 1.07 AU and reaching as far as 4.76 AU from the sun. 2010 QA5 is about 0.4 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than 90% of asteroids but tiny compared to large asteroids, comparable in size to the U.S. Capitol building.

Close Approaches

2010 QA5's orbit is 0.07 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2010 QA5 has 4 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
Sept. 14, 2020 12,109,680 20.261
Sept. 10, 2025 20,186,379 20.322
Sept. 18, 2080 12,114,502 20.846
Sept. 8, 2095 28,892,168 20.641

Images and Observations

2010 QA5's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Aug. 27, 2010. It was last officially observed on Sept. 16, 2020. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 150 observations used to determine its orbit.

Accessibility and Exploration

This asteroid is not considered a viable target for human exploration by the NHATS study.
