Overview

2008 UU1 is a very small asteroid whose orbit crosses the orbit of Earth. NASA JPL has classified 2008 UU1 as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" due to its predicted close pass(es) with Earth.

2008 UU1 orbits the sun every 744 days (2.04 years), coming as close as 0.40 AU and reaching as far as 2.81 AU from the sun. Its orbit is highly elliptical. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2008 UU1 is probably between 0.278 to 0.622 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than 90% of asteroids but tiny compared to large asteroids, very roughly comparable in size to the U.S. Capitol building.

Close Approaches

2008 UU1's orbit is 0.02 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2008 UU1 has 6 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
March 1, 2041 9,277,036 27.774
March 11, 2043 26,749,008 20.958
Oct. 16, 2061 27,376,492 23.667
March 3, 2096 4,774,862 26.491
Oct. 17, 2116 27,887,537 23.633
March 5, 2151 5,619,129 26.532

Images and Observations

2008 UU1's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Oct. 22, 2008. It was last officially observed on Nov. 2, 2010. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 31 observations used to determine its orbit.
