Overview

2005 UQ is a very small asteroid whose orbit approaches the orbit of Earth but does not cross it. NASA JPL has classified 2005 UQ as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

2005 UQ orbits the sun every 1,220 days (3.34 years), coming as close as 1.02 AU and reaching as far as 3.44 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2005 UQ is probably between 0.042 to 0.094 kilometers in diameter, making it a small to average asteroid, very roughly comparable in size to a school bus or smaller.

Close Approaches

2005 UQ's orbit is 0.04 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2005 UQ has 6 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
Sept. 25, 2025 10,975,305 8.284
Aug. 26, 2035 26,792,070 11.088
Oct. 28, 2118 18,991,834 11.814
Oct. 14, 2128 6,141,958 9.116
Oct. 6, 2138 6,874,730 8.480
Sept. 25, 2148 11,027,835 8.452

Images and Observations

2005 UQ's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Oct. 23, 2005. It was last officially observed on Nov. 10, 2015. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 47 observations used to determine its orbit.
