Overview

2003 WG is a very small asteroid whose orbit crosses the orbit of Earth. NASA JPL has classified 2003 WG as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" due to its predicted close pass(es) with Earth.

2003 WG orbits the sun every 1,390 days (3.81 years), coming as close as 0.53 AU and reaching as far as 4.35 AU from the sun. Its orbit is highly elliptical. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2003 WG is probably between 0.377 to 0.843 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than 90% of asteroids but tiny compared to large asteroids, very roughly comparable in size to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Close Approaches

2003 WG's orbit is 0.03 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2003 WG has 7 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
April 28, 2049 12,342,745 28.120
Nov. 3, 2064 5,594,694 27.139
April 18, 2114 29,045,246 33.006
April 24, 2133 12,456,737 29.719
April 24, 2152 10,525,877 29.279
May 8, 2171 26,529,012 23.447
Nov. 13, 2186 29,502,998 33.169

Images and Observations

2003 WG's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Nov. 18, 2003. It was last officially observed on Dec. 26, 2022. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 199 observations used to determine its orbit.
