Overview

1995 HM is a very small asteroid whose orbit approaches the orbit of Earth but does not cross it. NASA JPL has classified 1995 HM as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

1995 HM orbits the sun every 644 days (1.76 years), coming as close as 1.14 AU and reaching as far as 1.78 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 1995 HM is probably between 0.067 to 0.149 kilometers in diameter, making it a small to average asteroid, very roughly comparable in size to a school bus or smaller.

The rotation of 1995 HM has been observed. It completes a rotation on its axis every 1.62 hours.

Close Approaches

1995 HM's orbit is 0.13 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

1995 HM has 2 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
June 3, 2025 19,492,805 2.470
June 4, 2122 19,412,072 2.399

Images and Observations

1995 HM's orbit is determined by observations dating back to April 26, 1995. It was last officially observed on June 20, 1995. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 57 observations used to determine its orbit.

Accessibility and Exploration

This asteroid is not considered a viable target for human exploration by the NHATS study.
