Overview

137032 (1998 UO1) is a mid-sized asteroid whose orbit crosses the orbit of Earth. NASA JPL has classified 1998 UO1 as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

1998 UO1 orbits the sun every 736 days (2.02 years), coming as close as 0.38 AU and reaching as far as 2.81 AU from the sun. Its orbit is highly elliptical. 1998 UO1 is about 1.1 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than 99% of asteroids, comparable in size to the Golden Gate Bridge.

The rotation of 1998 UO1 has been observed. It completes a rotation on its axis every 2.93 hours.

Close Approaches

1998 UO1's orbit is 0.06 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

1998 UO1 has 5 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
Sept. 24, 2155 21,384,498 25.639
Sept. 26, 2157 14,404,616 27.313
Sept. 29, 2159 11,755,504 28.945
Oct. 2, 2161 15,195,040 30.662
Oct. 5, 2163 22,411,549 32.476

Images and Observations

1998 UO1's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Oct. 20, 1992. It was last officially observed on Dec. 27, 2022. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 1,526 observations used to determine its orbit.
