Overview

Porzia is a mid-sized asteroid with an orbit that crosses the orbit of Mars. NASA JPL has not classified Porzia as potentially hazardous because its orbit does not bring it close to Earth.

Porzia orbits the sun every 1,220 days (3.34 years), coming as close as 1.59 AU and reaching as far as 2.87 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, Porzia is probably between 6.991 to 15.633 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than 99% of asteroids, very roughly comparable in size to the San Francisco Bay.

The rotation of Porzia has been observed. It completes a rotation on its axis every 4.66 days.

Porzia's spectral type None (Tholen) / S (SMASSII) indicates that it is likely to contain magnesium silicate and iron silicate.

No Close Approaches

Porzia's orbit is 0.59 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is an very wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

Orbital simulations conducted by NASA JPL's CNEOS do not show any close approaches to Earth.

Porzia's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Sept. 10, 1929. It was last officially observed on April 22, 2020. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 2,965 observations used to determine its orbit.

Accessibility and Exploration

This asteroid is not considered a viable target for human exploration by the NHATS study.
