Iris is a average-sized asteroid orbiting between Mars and Jupiter in the main portion of the asteroid belt. NASA JPL has not classified Iris as potentially hazardous because its orbit does not bring it close to Earth.

Iris orbits the sun every 1,346 days (3.68 years), coming as close as 1.83 AU and reaching as far as 2.94 AU from the sun. Iris is about 199.8 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than most asteroids, comparable in size to the U.S. state of Maryland.

The rotation of Iris has been observed. It completes a rotation on its axis every 7.14 days.

Iris's spectral type S (Tholen) / S (SMASSII) indicates that it is likely to contain magnesium silicate and iron silicate.
