Overview

2019 JT7 is a very small asteroid whose orbit approaches the orbit of Earth but does not cross it. NASA JPL has classified 2019 JT7 as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

2019 JT7 orbits the sun every 1,060 days (2.90 years), coming as close as 1.07 AU and reaching as far as 3.00 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2019 JT7 is probably between 0.084 to 0.188 kilometers in diameter, making it a small to average asteroid, very roughly comparable in size to a school bus or smaller.

Close Approaches

2019 JT7's orbit is 0.08 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2019 JT7 has 6 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
July 17, 2019 13,871,854 6.954
Aug. 9, 2048 23,714,678 10.253
Aug. 6, 2080 18,224,178 9.118
July 31, 2112 11,560,614 7.787
June 22, 2144 29,321,275 9.682
Aug. 9, 2173 17,867,077 9.279

Images and Observations

2019 JT7's orbit is determined by observations dating back to May 9, 2019. It was last officially observed on Sept. 25, 2019. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 102 observations used to determine its orbit.
