Laodamia is a mid-sized asteroid with an orbit that crosses the orbit of Mars. NASA JPL has not classified Laodamia as potentially hazardous because its orbit does not bring it close to Earth.

Laodamia orbits the sun every 1,350 days (3.70 years), coming as close as 1.55 AU and reaching as far as 3.23 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, Laodamia is probably between 7.666 to 17.141 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than 99% of asteroids, very roughly comparable in size to the city of Boston.

The rotation of Laodamia has been observed. It completes a rotation on its axis every 5.17 days.

Laodamia's spectral type S (Tholen) / Sr (SMASSII) indicates that it is likely to contain magnesium silicate and iron silicate.

Laodamia's orbit is 0.57 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is an very wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

Orbital simulations conducted by NASA JPL's CNEOS do not show any close approaches to Earth.

Laodamia's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Jan. 5, 1924. It was last officially observed on Feb. 4, 2020. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 2,294 observations used to determine its orbit.

Accessibility and Exploration

This asteroid is not considered a viable target for human exploration by the NHATS study.
